As Halloween is fast approaching, as are people’s opinions on how much candy they let their kids eat.
Parents use several popular tactics to dissuade or prevent their kids from gorging themselves on all the chocolate they’ve gathered. Maybe the Switch Witch comes and exchanges all of the unhealthy options for healthier alternatives. Some households limit the number of candy bars their kids can keep. Maybe you’re very sneaky and your child’s bag is always missing the Butterfingers, which happen to be Mommy’s favorite. And others don’t care too much.
Unfortunately, the latter group is usually chastised for not caring about their child’s health and well-being. But we would like to argue the opposite opinion. Casting out candy spawns from diet culture and over-protective parenting. If your child hears from a young age that candy is bad, they could form an unhealthy relationship with food in the future.
Now, if your child is allergic to certain candies, please take that candy away. But there isn’t any real harm in letting your kids have at it one night out of the year.
Your children might learn how to eat better because of this experience. It might sound backward, but there are benefits to giving your children this freedom:
It teaches them to stop when they’re full, or els they’ll get a stomach ache
It teaches them to ration or section out their candy for days
It teaches them that it’s okay to have fun and indulge in food every once in a while
Every parent knows what’s best for their child, and we don’t want to tell you what to do. But there are so many worse things to worry about than letting your kid go a little crazy one night a year. Maybe you should join in on the fun while you’re at it.
