How to Help Your Little One Get Through Daylight Saving Without a Problem ☀️
It’s that time of year again! No, not Thanksgiving or Christmas, but trust us, that time is coming. It’s Daylight Saving Time! Before you hit the panic button on your alarm clock, slow down and take a deep breath. We know it’s difficult enough to ‘fall back’ on your own, but helping your little ones adjust to the time change is equally, if not more difficult.
Nicole Johnson from The Baby Sleep Site warns parents their little one’s internal clock won’t change and adapt naturally.
If you’re worried about the abrupt change, start easing your little one into a new routine a few days earlier and adjusting the time back 15 minutes at a time. That way, they won’t be jarred and confused when they have to go to bed an hour earlier on Sunday night.
Otherwise, try your best to stick to a routine. If everything suddenly changes, your toddler won’t adapt organically. But if you ease them into something new, they might not notice the difference!

Now that you know how to ace the time change, it’s time to talk about how your baby should sleep. The way your baby sleeps can impact their quality of sleep, as well as their health. I know, another rule, right? But thankfully, these baby sleeping positions are pretty easy to employ and might save your baby’s life.
Back-to-Sleep
The World Health Organization recommends this position. It decreases the probabilty of SIDS. It’s just what it sounds like putting your baby on their back when they fall asleep.
Back sleeping allows airways to remain open and lets babies breathe easier. This position also prevents babies from possibly suffocating themselves with their pillow or bedding.
Side Sleeping
While many adults might opt for this sleeping position, the American Academy of Pediatrics discourages side sleeping for babies. This sleeping position is often the cause of SIDS.
Your healthcare provider might suggest this position, as it is known to relieve gastroesophageal reflux, aid premature babies, and help with other medical conditions.
Tummy Sleeping
Tummy sleeping can also cause SIDS, as your infant’s airway is often blocked by a pillow or bedding when they’re in this position.
If your baby can only sleep on their stomach, ensure their crib is empty of objects that can further obstruct their airways. The US National Institute of Child Health and Human Development suggests that parents only allow their babies to sleep on their stomachs when they’re fully supervised or having ‘tummy time’ on a mat.
If your baby is a tummy sleeper, choose firm bedding so their faces don’t sink into the fabrics.
Co-Sleeping
This sleeping method happens when a parent and a baby share the same sleeping space. Some parents want their babies to join them in the bed or use a bedside sleeper. While co-sleeping can create a secure bond between infant and parent, it can also cause SIDS, overheating, and potential harm to the baby.
However, parents are also more aware of their baby’s breathing patterns and health while sharing a bed.
Swaddling
If you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed by all of these options, you might want to consider a swaddling technique. Wrap a baby in a blanket or cloth, snugly restraining their arms and legs.
Infants feel secure with this technique. It reduces the risk of SIDS. Swaddling can also help your baby stay on their back throughout the night. Make sure that the swaddle isn’t too tight. If your baby starts to roll over when they’re in a swaddle, take them out of it immediately.
No matter what sleeping position you decide on, always make sure to take the proper safety precautions before you leave your baby for the night:
🛌 Place their head above the bedding
🛌 Adjust the temperature so it’s not too hot or too cold
🛌 Use a firm mattress and bedding
🛌 Don’t let the baby’s head sit too deep on a pillow
🛌 Use a pacifier
🛌 Remove extra objects from your baby’s crib
