How to Keep Your Newborn Healthy This Holiday Season 🤒

Newborns are highly susceptible to illnesses, as their immune systems are still developing, but it’s especially bad this time of year.

Although it’s normal for your little one to catch a cold this holiday season, it’s also avoidable. Dr. Valentine Rae Esposito, M.D., offers parents practical tips to keep their babies healthy this season.

Stay Away from Sick People 🚫

If you know that someone is symptomatic, don’t let your baby be around them. Babies’ weak immune systems make them highly likely to catch others’ colds, so avoid sick people this time of year.

Set Boundaries 🙅🏻‍♀️

Talk to your spouse about the boundaries that work for your family. Some families don’t want to take their little ones on flights, others prefer small gatherings instead of large parties. Find your boundaries and stick to them!

Ask About Vaccines 💉

Before you visit your family, it might bring you peace of mind to ask if your family is up-to-date on their vaccines. Common vaccines include:

Keep it Clean 🧽

Bacteria and germs are everywhere this time of year. Keep surfaces clean, wash your hands, wash your baby’s hands, and do it properly. One of the best ways to time your hand washing is to sing the ‘Happy Birthday’ song twice.

Keep Breastfeeding When You’re Sick 🤱🏾

If you get sick while breastfeeding, don’t stop feeding your little one! Your breastmilk will pass the antibodies onto your baby. You might want to bottlefeed them during this time, but let them drink the milk!

Teaching your children how to practice gratitude is one of the most important lessons they’ll ever learn. Gratitude inspires children to be more empathetic. Experts equate gratitude to higher levels of happiness

Although your children might not grasp the concept of gratitude fully this Thanksgiving, here are a few simple activities that might inspire conversations and lifelong practices of gratitude.

Model Gratitude

Kids learn by watching others, so if you want your children to learn gratitude, start showing it! Make it a regular habit to talk about things you’re grateful for at the end of the day.

Make a Gratitude Tree or Jar

If you want to make gratitude more of a hands-on task, DIY it! Make a gratitude tree or jar with your kiddos this year and add to it!

Read Books About Gratitude

There are so many children’s books about gratitude. Make it a Thanksgiving tradition to read some of them! Some of our favorites include Gratitude is My Superpower, We Are Grateful, and Bear Says Thanks.

Make a Gratitude Collage

Another kid-friendly DIY you can try is a gratitude collage. Make a collage of everything your child says they’re grateful for! You might need some magazines and family photos for this one.

Donate With Your Children

Donating is one of the best ways to teach your children how to practice gratitude and giving.

Make it a Daily Routine

Gratitude should be a part of all of our days. Start asking your family what they’re thankful for at the dinner table. When you infuse gratitude into your daily routine, your children will catch on naturally.
