What Are The Biggest Differences Between Gen X and Millenial Parenting? 🚾

It’s no secret that every new generation of parents has new practices, priorities, and preferences. And while there has yet to be a generation that has done everything perfectly, there is something that each generation can learn from the last.

In case you’re wondering, Generation X is known for having big families, weathering several challenges, and more. Meanwhile, millennials came after this generation (between 1981 and 1996) and developed unique parenting rules and regulations. While there is merit to both of the ways these generations raised and are raising their kids, we want to highlight some of Gen X's wisdom in their parenting style.

1. Helicopter Parenting

Helicopter parenting can manifest itself in several different ways. Some parents might track their children’s every move on a GPS-locating app, while others might be too involved in their children’s preschool activities or playdates.

For the most part, Gen X did not employ this parenting style in their lives. Matthew Hennessey, author of Zero Hour for Gen X, explains that “Generation X comes from a tactile world.” They didn’t have cell phones or feel the need to look over their childrens’ shoulders. This resulted in Gen X approaching parenting with a somewhat hands-off approach, allowing their children more freedom, something millennials could learn from.

2. Extracurriculars

The current parenting generation is known for over-scheduling and committing their kids to too many lessons, extracurriculars, and more. This constant on-the-go schedule is leading to burnout and unhealthy boundaries.

Gen X’s hands-off mentality carries over to this subject as well. A poll in Time magazine found that 50% of Gen X parents believed their friend’s children were overscheduled and had too many activities, while only 36% of millennials agreed.

While your little one might not get into Julliard at 12 years old, we’re in favor of letting your children find out what they want to do on their own and letting them be bored, if that’s what it takes. Don’t overburden your children with activities and schedules, instead, be more like Gen X.

3. The Comparison Game

Posting about your children’s accomplishments every now and then is great, but seeing a constant barrage of parents bragging about their children can turn into a comparison game very quickly. If you’re getting burnt out and exhausted thinking about posting all of your kiddo’s wins, take a page out of Gen X’s book and just don't!

It’s amazing how much a hands-off approach to parenting can do for you and your kid’s life. Maybe the biggest secret to Gen X’s parenting approach is simply to let whatever happens to happen and not worry about it too much. Easier said than done, right?

How to Motherhood: Everything You Need to Know About Your Toddler’s Sleep Schedule 🛌

Sleep schedule? As a mother of a toddler? Yeah, we’re laughing a bit too. But the good news is no matter how impossible or difficult it might seem, toddlers can learn and abide by a somewhat stable sleep schedule. The trick is creating one.

It’s important to note that toddlers need to sleep between 11-14 hours every 24 hours. This time also includes naps, so don’t worry if your toddler isn’t quite sleeping through the night yet. Toddlers and babies usually take about two naps a day. Once they hit 18 months, they only need one nap because their allotted sleep hours lessen. Until then, your toddler must get the necessary hours of sleep.

đŸ‘¶đŸœđŸ’€ Sleep helps toddlers:

  • Experience memory and growth

  • Regulate their emotions

  • Create a supported immune system

According to Cara Walker, founder of Well Rested Mama and sleep consultant, toddlers should go to bed between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. Your toddler will naturally wake up between 6 and 8 a.m. if they stick to that schedule. Unfortunately, there are some instances when your toddler will wake up at 4 in the morning, but that shouldn’t be the norm every night.

If you’re struggling to calm your toddler down, consider creating a short bedtime routine. Your toddler’s nighttime routine should only take 10-15 minutes. Do the same things every night, like brushing their teeth, shower, pajamas, and story. Don’t try to change their routine. It’s called a routine for a reason -- it ought to lull them into a comforting rhythm and a mindset for bed.
