🍋 Small Lemons: 14 Things Experts Say Your Toddler Should Know How to Do by Four
It’s no secret that toddlers are quick learners. One day, it may feel like everything is new and complicated, and then the next, they’re walking, running, and even jumping. But what should your child know how to do and when?
Even though it seems like every parent has a different answer to this question, we consulted the experts and made a list of the 14 your child should know how to do before they’re four.
@lindseygurk Everything is “one hundred” including his confidence 😆🥰 Correction: “Cafe” is zero. Zero stars. #momhumor #toddlermomlife #fyp #parenthoo... See more
Run, jump, and climb 🏃🏻♂️
While they might not be the most graceful ballerinas, your toddler should be able to balance and move their bodies on their own.
Tell stories and use their imagination 🦄
Imagination can and will play a huge part in your toddler’s growth. Make sure they feel safe to do so.
Understand how to behave in most situations💯
While we don’t expect your child to be the networker in the room, they should have a general grasp on what behavior is appropriate in most situations.
Make friends 👯
Another social skill your toddler needs to learn is the ability to interact with other children in a friendly manner.
Throw and catch a ball (hand-eye coordination)⛹🏿♀️
This is mostly for fun, but it’s also a valuable skill that all of your active little ones should learn by age four.
Have a loose concept of time ⏰
While this skill might also take a bit longer to learn, if you can tell your toddler something is happening ‘tomorrow’ or ‘next week’ and they know about when that is, you’re in good standing.
Speak in complete sentences 💬
By four years old, your child should be able to form a complete sentence when they speak to someone. Children’s vocabulary grows exponentially, so make sure they’re using it.
Be able to decipher between the real and pretend 🌝
As we said before, providing a space for your child to play pretend and imagine is healthy, but they should know the difference between their imaginings and the real world.
Dress and undress themselves 👖
When they’re just getting started, your child might have some issues with buttons and zippers, but for the most part, your four-year-old should be able to dress and undress themselves.
Use scissors (with a blunt tip) ✂️
By age four, your little one should be able to use utensils, scissors, pens, and other small toys without too much effort.
Use the restroom 🚻
While accidents might still happen, your child should be well on their way to being completely potty trained by four years old.
Feed themselves🍝
Gone are the days of food being delivered by an imaginary airplane. Your child should be able to feed themselves by four years old and even serve themselves, depending on the dish.
Follow multi-step commands 🚦
You might need to be a bit patient on this one, but your toddler should be able to hear a few basic commands, like ‘brush your teeth,’ ‘wash your face,’ and ‘put your pajamas on’ and retain all of them pretty well.
Empathize with others 👯
As your little one learns how to interact with the world around them, they also need to learn to love those in that world. Connecting with others is one of the most crucial lessons your child can learn.

Ingredients:
2 packages cream cheese (softened)
2 cups grated cheddar cheese
½ cup chopped jalapeño

⅛ tsp black pepper
Salt
Crushed tortilla chips, paprika, and black sesame seeds to top
Directions:
Combine all the ingredients except for the toppings in a medium bowl. Measure in the salt and pepper to taste.
Cover the bowl and refrigerate for one hour.
Separate the toppings on small plates.
Use a cookie scoop or a spoon to portion out the cheese, roll them into balls, and portion them out into three equal groups.
